Veneration for matchmakers was left behind in the Old World, though. Marriage brokers (called shadchanim in Yiddish) are highly respected in traditional communities, for creating a successful match is seen as not only a mitzvah but an act of God. For thousands of years, generation after generation of Jewish singles have relied on the Shidduch, the traditional Jewish matchmaking system, to find their beshert - their destiny, which some consider a soulmate.
